Use and Fence Basics

How does an electric fence work?

Irish Plugs are 230V. Frequency is 50 Hz.

Fencers generally operate at 220V and put out a high pulse voltage of between 2000 and 10,000 V but typically 6000-8000 is a good fence. But very low amperage or current (around 120 miliamps) i.e. High voltage and low amperage.

From time to time, you will encounter voltage drops or face grounding issues along your fence line. When this happens, having a fence tester, also known as a voltage meter or voltage tester, is needed to identify your fence problem. when a fence is setup it isn't ‘turned on and set to e.g. 8kv or 6kv’. It simply puts out the same power at all times. What drains it is the size of the fence or the fact that there is a hedge brushing off of it or an animal tried to jump it and pulled part of the fence down and it is hitting the ground somewhere. Basically, an electric fence puts out a steady current. if something is touching the fence then it causes it to drain and lowers the voltage.

Can I use a regular digital AC or DC millimeter or a digital volt-ohm meter to test an electric Fence?

Depending on the quality of your multimeter you'll see a fluctuating of numbers on the screen, which tells you that you're getting some kind of pulse, but you have no idea if it's the full potential or not.

Also, if the multimeter is of lesser quality, you'll either blow the fuse inside, or ruin the circuit board inside. Unfortunately, you can't use a regular volt meter for testing electric fence chargers, they're just not designed for the high voltage (8Kv) pulse that Boundary Blade has been designed for.

Do you have to touch the red casing against the fence to get a reading?

No. You hold the closed unit IN FRONT of the fence link shown on the packaging. The product is a Low cost 5-light wireless tester to measure the approximate fence voltage without a Ground Spike.

What is the measurement range of Boundary Blade?

2500 V – 4000 V – 6000 V – 8000 V

Do you need a grounding spike?

No grounding spike is required.

Are the lights Bright?

Yes, the lights are strong LEDs and can be seen in sunshine.

How do I use the Boundary Blade fence tester?

Make sure the blade is fully closed.

The fence tester will NOT WORK if the blade is open.

With the blade closed, simply hold the unit IN FRONT of the electrified fence, close to the current, and push the ‘PRESS’ button.

Warranty

What is the warranty on the Boundary Blade?

The unit comes with a 30 day warranty.

Any opening of areas except for battery compartment voids all warranty.

Please Ensure your unit is cleaned properly, used sensibly, and kept dry as this will be inspected if returned.

Please email sales@boundaryblade.com if you need to open a support ticket.

Materials

What is the Knife Blade Made from?

The blade material is stainless steel 30Cr13. This steel has good mechanical processing performance.

After heat treatment (quenching and tempering), it has excellent corrosion resistance and high polishing strength and wear resistance.

The blade is flame retardant.

The length of the blade is 7.24cm (2.85 inches)

What material is the product casing made from?

The product casing material is TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). TPU not only possesses excellent properties of high tension, high tensile strength, strong toughness and aging resistance, but also is a mature environmental protection material.

TPU has many applications including automotive instrument panels, caster wheels, power tools, sporting goods, medical devices, drive belts, footwear, inflatable rafts, and a variety of extruded film, sheet and profile applications.

Is the product waterproof?

No. It is advised to keep your Boundary Blade Clean, dry and away from water.

Will the batteries drain on shelf storage?

No. All Products come with 2 universal and replaceable CR2032 3v batteries. The batteries are not activated in any way unless the blade is closed AND the "PRESS" button is engaged.

How do I change the batteries?

If the ‘battery’ indicator light is on when testing, or you are not getting a reading, simply unscrew the reverse side and change the batteries.

Please DO NOT remove the glue seals or anything from the front facing side of the tester as this will void all warranty.

Why do I need batteries? Is it possible for the knife to simply use the power from the electric fence to turn the lights on or off?

The LED lights only need 3 to 9v. Batteries help protect the circuit board design in the event of a failure for safety.

Do any internal parts of the product vibrate?

No. There are no moving parts inside the product.

Safety

Can I test the voltage of an electric fence with the Blade Opened?

No. When testing the voltage of a live fence, the blade should not be opened from the sleeve or touched of a fence. The fence tester electronics will only get engaged to give you a reading when the blade is fully closed and the "PRESS" button engaged.

Can you touch the red casing of the product against the electric fence?

Yes but the correct way to test the fence is to hold the closed unit IN FRONT of the fence as shown on the packaging. An Electric fence emits a pulse. The insulating plastic of the handle does not conduct electricity, and the inner antenna is coated with an insulation layer. Always exercise caution and common sense.

Is the Boundary Blade classed as a "flick knife" or "weapon"?

Boundary Blade is a simple, cost effective spring self-locking pocket knife tool. It requires manual force to lock the blade in place, not gravity.
Folding blades that are part of a multi-tool device, and are under 3 inches are not classified as weapons.
Please always know and be aware of your local laws around the possession of knives.
